All au pairs are required to take 6 credits during their year in the U.S., giving them the chance to study and experience the American educational system while they’re here. To help offset the cost, host families are responsible for contributing up to $500 toward their au pair’s education requirement. (If au pairs extend their time on the program for an additional 6, 9, or 12 months, they’ll take additional credits; 3 credits for a 6-month extension and 6 credits for a 9- or 12-month extension.)
We encourage au pairs and host families to explore educational options early on, as the year progresses quickly. Also, au pairs must complete their classes well in advance of the end of their first year in order to extend their time on the program.
Some au pairs decide to take classes in their area of study or ESL, while others prefer to learn about something totally new or just for fun. The good news is, there are lots of educational opportunities available to au pairs in New York!
